  11.      /etc/spritehosts - file containing Sprite host information
  12.  
  13. DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONN
  14.      The file //eettcc//sspprriitteehhoossttss is used to keep  host  information
  15.      for  hosts in the Sprite network.  It contains the following
  16.      fields:

  18.      spriteID      A small integer  used  to  identify  the  host
  19.                    internally.
  20.  
  21.      netType       The type of the physical network for the  fol-
  22.                    lowing nneettAAddddrr field.
  23.  
  24.      netAddr       The physical network address of the host.
  25.  
  26.      inetAddr      The Internet address of the host.
  27.  
  28.      machType      The machine type of  the  host.   This  string
  29.                    will   be   substituted   for  occurrences  of
  30.                    $$MMAACCHHIINNEE that occur  in  pathnames  opened  by
  31.                    this host.
  32.  
  33.      name          The official Internet name of this host.
  34.  
  35.      aliases       Zero or more aliases, typically  shorter  than
  36.                    the official Internet name.

  38.      This file is read during startup by the nneettrroouuttee program  to
  39.      initialize  the  kernel's  internal  route table.  Actually,
  40.      routing will be done successfully without  this  initializa-
  41.      tion.   However,  the initialization is needed on servers so
  42.      they know the machine type of their  clients.   Also,  error
  43.      messages  from  the kernel will use the host name instead of
  44.      the spriteID if the initialization has been done.
